Cycling on the Isle of Wight |
| The Island is bigger
than you think! Although it is possible to cycle the 'Round the
Island' route in a long day, you will not have much time to explore
and enjoy the sights.
On a day trip choose to visit half of the Island. The main towns are Newport in the centre, Ryde, Cowes and East Cowes, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor. Main roads connecting the towns can be unpleasant for cycling but there is usually a quieter road alternative. The Island has the added bonus of hundreds of miles of bridleways which provide amazing routes for the offroad cyclist. Invest in an OS map 29 Explorer - it's packed with route information

Cycle Route R23 links Sandown, Newport and Cowes (The cross Newport link
is planned to be improved by re-routing) and R23 continues from
Southampton on the mainland.
National Cycle Route R22 is projected to link Ryde and Freshwater but completion is 5 years away at least. |

1. Cowes to Newport. This is a long established route following the old railway line along the banks of River Medina. A spur joins the route to Northwood providing good country routes to the west of the Island. It starts from the south end of Arctic Road, Cowes and at the Newport end can be found along the river at Dodnor Industrial Estate. 2. Newport (Shide) to Sandown (Perowne Way). The continuation of Route 23 to Sandown again using the old railway line through a quiet rural part of the Island. Between Shide and Blackwater it lies beside the River Medina whilst past Merstone it joins the River Yar valley to Sandown. The start of the cycleway at Perowne Way can be found 400m from Sandown Station (under the subway and turn right) and opposite the shop.. 3.R22 is signed from Wootton Bridge to Fairlee on the outskirts of Newport but shares a pavement on the main road for part of the section - from Fairlee cross road into Medina High School (for route 4 see below). The Ryde to Wootton section can be cycled using the bridleway past Quarr Abbey however the coastal path through Binstead is still designated as a footpath. At the Ryde end look for Coastal Path signs from Esplanade. 4. Newport to Mountbatten Centre - A quiet route from the harbour and along the river bank to Medina High School. By crossing the A3054 you can link up with the Wootton to Newport route. 5. Yarmouth to Freshwater. A popular and practical route linking the two towns (part of the signed 'Round the Island' route) Starts at Thorley just east of Yarmouth but is signed from the Ferry Terminal to join the route at the old railway station. The route uses the old railway line to Freshwater and you can continue to Freshwater Bay less than a mile away. |
6 A signed coastal route from Ryde through Appley and Puckpool Park to Seaview village. It starts from east of the Canoe Lake following close to the sea wall and sandy beaches, past the Hersey Nature Reserve and into Seaview.
7 Brading to St Helens following the old railway line - however it is not surfaced but is a pleasant offroad bridleway alternative to a busy road. Follow lane beside Brading Church and Old Town Hall to connect with route. 8 Shanklin to Wroxall using another disused railway line. An undeveloped route so the surface is poor in some places. The link from Yarmouth in the west with Newport is in the development stage. |
| The
Sunshine Trail
Island 2000 has developed a 12 mile circular route from Sandown and Shanklin which is now fully signposted. A free map is available from Tourist Information Centres detailing the on and off road sections.
