Newsletter September 2001
Things can only get better!
Well at last they may be about to. As you go around the Island you will notice that there are now many more cycle racks. There are now also more signs going up for visitors and small improvements such as a contra flow system for cyclists in Little London in Newport (connecting Sea Street with the Cowes cycleway). As you remember from the last newsletter a supposedly new dialogue between CycleWight and the Council was to occur and this is one of the signs of some improvement. Another is that we were asked to comment on changes to the roundabout at the IW College. Though you have been asked by us before, the Council have again pressed us for suggestions for improvements for cyclists If you have any ideas please contact Tim on 520529. Unfortunately the dialogue is still too infrequent and some of the big issues such as the 'cross-Island' cycleroutes still seem to to be slow in moving forward.
National Bike Week
The two events in which we were involved, were a great success. The sun was out for both events which made a nice change. Over 70 people turned up for the Bikers Breakfast. We had great support from Sainsburys. Once again the RNLI "came to our rescue" with over 20 members of staff turning up for their orange juice and croissants. The Family Convergence Bike Ride truly was one for the families including a baby who was just a few weeks old in a Burley trailer, her parents and grandparents. 48 people mat at the Bike Shed for an ice cream and a picnic. A super day, thanks to Geoff Smith at the Bike Shed and the Minghellas for, you can guess!
Walking Festival
CycleWight had a stall in the High Street Newport for the opening day of the Walking Festival on September 15th. A car free town centre thronged with people of all ages looking at the various stalls, listening to the music or just having a chat to friends in the middle of road! What's the problem in excluding traffic every day?
