| Arriving by Wightlink
catamaran at the Pier Head, you cycle along the wooden planks of Ryde
Pier to arrive on dry land at Ryde Esplanade.
The town of Ryde (population 25,000) which climbs up from the seafront, has many attractive features for the visitor. The Regency and Victorian buildings have been retained and the shopping streets of Union Street, Cross Street and High Street contain numerous distinctive local shops. The Esplanade to the east features amenities such as Ice Rink, 10 pin Bowling, Canoe Lake and sandy beaches. |
| 1 Towards Seaview eastwards along the
coast.
At Ryde Pier entrance turn left and follow the Esplanade road to the Canoe Lake - follow the seafront road to Appley where the route is a shared cycle and footpath through Appley park past the beach football pitch and into Puckpool Park. Join the seafront road to Seaview, a small seaside town. You can continue along the coast to Seagrove Bay and then follow the Coastal Path to St Helens. |

| The main shopping street, Union St. is one way so it pleasant to push your bike up the hill - there are numerous cafes, pubs and banks here and the Royal Victoria Arcade (right - one of England's first shopping arcades). Continue up hill to the High Street (a traffic quiet section). | ![]() |
| When the shops end follow Swanmore Road, and just past Alldays shop you have a choice of direction. Turn left into Ashey Road to follow a quiet rural route to Brading and Sandown, or continue uphill into Upton Road to follow a quiet rural route to Havenstreet and Newport or Newchurch and Ventnor. | ![]() |
| 3 Towards East Cowes and Newport
on an off road route. At the Tourist Information Centre continue up St Thomas St. and take the 2nd turn right - Spencer Road (photo right) - continue along this quiet residential road (past the private road sign) until it ends at gates.

| Turn right to follow the Coastal Path to
Binstead Church. Turn right and first right to follow the track past
Quarr Abbey (photo right) continue to Fishbourne Lane past the Car Ferry terminal to
the traffic lights and turn right to continue to Wootton Bridge. Take first track left after bridge and follow
R22 signs to Station
Road.
For Newport turn left and continue for 400m to opposite Wootton Station. Here you can join the cycle route to Newport. For East Cowes turn right & follow 'Round the Island' route signs to Whippingham |

| 4 By Train to Shanklin
The photo shows the train from Ryde to Shanklin - 1930's ex-London Underground stock - You can take bikes on board at Ryde Pier Head and travel to Sandown Station where you can join the start of Route 23 cycleroute to Newport and Cowes or try the signed Sunshine Trail. |
