The Sunshine Trail

Island 2000 has developed a 12 mile circular route from Sandown and Shanklin which is now fully signposted.  A free map is available from Tourist Information Centres detailing the on and off road sections.

Wootton Addition to Route 22 completed but opening delayed.

Contractors have completed the short section of new cycletrack at the Wootton Woodland Cemetery. It allows cyclists to avoid Wootton High Street by turning left at the bridge following the bridleway before turning right uphill at the cemetery car park.  It emerges at Fernhill near the Station Road junction.  The Council have not tarmaced the route but unfortunately have surfaced it using fibre-deck, giving a 30mm coating of fine gravel (and not recommended for safe cycling at present until the surface beds in and before it is swept)  It's another short length of the slowly emerging projected Route 22 linking Ryde, Newport and Yarmouth. Some problems with the construction has led to the postponement of the official opening planned for  Friday 16th September.

News in Brief

Cycling is an important component of the plans for the Ryde Transport Interchange which will go for planning permission next month. Included in the detail of the £5million cutting edge design by architects of the London Eye is provision for a bike hire shop. Access ways will link the interchange to the Ryde to Seaview cycle route and to the projected Ryde to Newport route. http://www.projectryde.org/

Work has now started on the short section of  Ryde to Newport cycleroute linking Wootton Bridge (Lakeside) to Station Road using the planning gain of the Woodland Cemetery behind the Estate.

CycleWight will be organising a ride from Medham on Saturday 17th September to coincide with the launch of the cycling festival. Full details of the Festival events at www.sunseaandcycling.com

February Cycle Forum

The latest Cycle Forum, chaired by Sue Marshall was attended by Nick Farthing from Sustrans. His remit covers Hampshire and the Isle of Wight on a 3 day week basis and his input and experience will help CycleWight in the future development of Route 22 on the Island - the Ryde to Yarmouth cycleroute.  George Wilks outlined to the Forum the problems of the missing links in the route at present.

CycleWight and all interested groups and individuals have the opportunity to submit their views before the end of  February to the Council's Rights of Way Department as they formulate their future plans for the Island's network of footpaths, cycleways and bridleways. (Contact Lee Skinner IWC)

The next phase of the Local Traffic Plan to cover the next 5 years will soon be submitted to Government.

The impending development of the Newport Bus Station will have implications for cyclists. While construction takes place (maybe starting March and lasting a year) major road changes are required with Church Litten  becoming one way south to north and the west side of Church Litten becomes the Bus stopping areas. Cyclists will be able to take advantage of new bus lanes but will loose the use of the Church Litten footpath.  When construction is complete the line of the Newport cross town link can then be confirmed.

The next forum will be on Thursday 31st March at 3 p.m.

Working-party planned for Newport - Cowes Cycleway

CycleWight will be organising a weekend working party on  the 12/13 March on the section of the Newport Cowes path, Route 23 that connects the track to Blackhouse Quay by the River Medina.  We'll be litter picking, cutting back bramble and scrub and quartering back the path to re-establish its full width.

Sustrans Rangers have been informed, the event will be under the CycleWight  banner, and we will be insured through the IWC.  All CycleWight members and friends of cycling are welcome to join in.  More information from George Wilks on 524381.

Before: Some views of the route taken on 27th January 2005 showing how the path is in need of  widening and tidying up.
