News from CycleWight 2007

CycleWight's AGM
On Friday 23rd November CycleWight held its AGM. Over forty members and friends attended with the guest speaker Dale Bostock (pictured left with CycleWight's continuing Chair, Tim Thorne)- the Cycling Development Officer of Southampton City Council. He outlined the progress in cycling routes in the City and plans for extending, including  Sustrans Route 23 which continues on the mainland from Southampton to Reading. Southampton can provide a far bigger budget for cycling and walking than the Island with large contributions from developers and Section 106 aggreements. In 2007 they have been successful in hosting a leg of the Tour of Britain and active in linking with Health Authorities to promote cycling activities.

Newport to Yarmouth Greenway Project loses Lottery Cash

The West Wight Landscape Partnership has withdrawn the cycleway plan for R22 between Newport and Yarmouth from its basket of projects to receive continuing lottery funding. Delays in finding an agreed route would have pushed completion beyond the three year deadline and broken the condition of the lottery heritage money. Any new initiative to revive the scheme will now have to come from the IW Council.

Improvements promised for Cycling

Meanwhile the capital spending programme for 2007/8 for cycling includes the improvement of R22 Newport to Ryde between Mews Lane on Fairlee Road and the Riverside Centre.  This will mean major expenditure on solving the flooding problem in the cutting north of Halberry Lane. This work could be completed by next April and would provide an offroad (just) cycle route between Newport and Wootton Station. There will also be improvement for cyclists at Binfield Corner.

Work is in preparation to provide a permanent solution to the slippery condition of the boardwalk section of R23 at Horringford by applying a non slip textured surface. If there is any cash left by March 31 after this, resurfacing work at Alverstone is promised.

Cycling Contraflow back by Christmas

A contraflow for cyclists will be reinstated by Christmas in Trafalgar Road. A decision on which direction Trafalgar Road ends up as one way is yet to be made by IW Councillors. We understand that the existing westbound flow is the better solution for overall traffic flow in Newport.

Two problems in Newport yet to be resolved are:  i) ban on right turn for cyclists from the High Street into the Bus Lane in St James Square ii) the experimental no entry from New Street into Chapel Street (applies to all traffic including cycles) You can comment on this on the IW Council website.

Quarr Abbey are in the process of applying for funding for projects which will include the upgrade of the bridleway (cycle route R22) between Binstead and Fishbourne.

Bike to Italy

A team of Isle of Wight firefighters will be cycling from St Thomas Square in Newport to the Vatican Square, Rome in September 2008.  The 'Square to Square' charity cycle challenge will be raising money for vital equipment for cancer patients on the Island. See their web site at www.sq2sq.com

Cycle Path Working Party Update

NEWS FROM THE CYCLE FORUM

Work will begin at the end of February to build a new deck for the Cement Mills Viaduct on the Cowes to Newport section of Route 23. It will involve a 6 week diversion along the waterfront path. This is a major investment in the cycleway network and by April we will have a safe surface over this picturesque part of the route. We understand that delays in ordering materials will mean the bridge not now be open until May.

Island 2000 are pushing ahead with plans to produce the all important cross Newport link from Shide to Dodnor. With land purchase completed, Martin Gibson outlined to route which will skirt around the Shide river park with a dedicated cycle path following the river through Matalan car park and access road, following South Street and using the wide unused strip between Pyle Street and High Street.and into County Hall access roads.  All this could be completed this year.  This is an eagerly awaited project which will add great value to the Island's network. www.island2000.org.uk

There is a public meeting on Monday 29th January (7 p.m.) at the Yarmouth Institute to discuss progress on Route 22 Yarmouth to Newport. Sustrans is involved in the £5m project to build a cycleroute that follows much of the old railway line.

Increase in Cycling is one of the targets the IW Council has set itself and regular counts are made manually to check on progress.  Now technology comes to the rescue with buried wire loops to be installed to count cyclists on cycleways throughout the year. Three sites have been identified for the loops including the south end of the Cowes-Newport route and Freshwater to Yarmouth.

The disruption to Newport traffic with the closure of Pyle Street for new gas pipes has affected cyclists.  We have lost the contra flow in Trafalgar Road with the reversal of traffic,.so deserve an emergency east bound contra flow from West Street to Nodehill to compensate.

CycleWight will be organising a work party shortly to improve the neglected entrance to the Cowes to Newport cycleway at Arctic Road.  Volunteers required!

With only a miniscule budget for maintainance of the footpaths, bridleways and cycletracks  it is certain that there will be criticism of the Council for overgrown paths and bad surfaces. It was suggested by Andy Newman of the Wayfarers that there could be a 'live' web page to report in problems on the cycleway network and for the Council to update progress on each topic and to state the priorities.

The 2007 Cycling Festival is planned for the 15 to 23 September with three routes on Sunday 16 September for the 'Cycle The Wight' and the 3, 7 and 14 Hills Killer on the 23 September.  Claire Whittington of the IWC Events Team  is looking for volunteers to lead other cycling events in the week  Can you help? Contact her at claire.whittington@iow.gov.uk www.sunseaandcycling.com

Island 2000 will be starting shortly on a conservation and habitat improvement at Merstone Station on the Newport to Sandown section of Route 23.

Priorities for the IWC cycling budget for this year will be the Cowes town through route, making progress with the West Wight route 22 and a 'tidying up' on the Wootton section of Route22.

CycleForum first meeting for 2007

The Isle of Wight Council will be hosting the first meeting of the Cycle Forum on January 24th. This regular event brings together the Council highways engineers and  Councillors with cycle users, cycle shops and hirers and others interested in cycling such as the Police and Tourism.

CycleWight will be there and we will report back the latest plans for cycling development on the Island. Items on the agenda include a new printing of the Island's cycle map and progress of the Newport to Yarmouth cycleway.
