Update 20 09 2025

Campaigning > Cyclewight Latest News
An update on the AGM and some other news.
This year it will be at Caffe Isola in Newport in Upper St James Street on Friday 3rd October at 7.30. We are busy organising a variety of activities and presentations for the night but it will include an update on the Island Green Link as well as an online presentation by Mark Philpotts who, as Ranty Highwayman, is one of the leading Active Travel advocates in the country. His professional life has been designing walking and cycling infrastructure so someone who has a depth of knowledge on a subject very close to our hearts. We hope members will make every effort to attend and bring your friends.  As ever there will be a raffle! If you could donate a prize that would be fantastic. See you there. More information on Mark here

We are taking this opportunity to let you know more about the Island Transport Plan. The first road shows have been this week and there are more to follow. You can obtain a paper copy of the questionnaire for the plan at these meetings. There is an opportunity for people to attend an online meeting. More details on the meetings and commenting on the plan follow the link. Here The closing date for submission on commenting online is 24th Nov. We intend to meet with The Ramblers to look at areas of mutual interest before submitting our comments. We will also be sending members our reflections on the plan in our next briefing.

Please remember the Island Roads annual survey is now active and closes on 30th September. Follow this link.

We have issued a Press Release following the collision between a cyclist and car at Smallbrook. We had identified the issues with the redesign in 2022 and had written to point out that it did not take cyclists into account enough.

At the present time there are several issues which we are asking for clarity from the Council. These include the non-erection of the 'Think Bike' signs, the non removal of the humps in Birchmore Lane and of barriers on many of the cycle routes around the Island. We are expecting an update on these issues before the AGM.

We met with a representative from Visit Isle of Wight last week. We discussed topics of interest including providing information about cycling to interested people, closure of the paths at busy times of the year and encouraging more people to leave their cars at home.  They are promoting slow guides which encourage to walk and cycle. Hopefully the meetings. will become a more regular thing.
